Patagonia, Argentina: Trekking the Andes 2014
What a great week! We timed the weather perfectly! Dry and sunny for most of our visit while we spent the week trekking from our hotel bases in El Chalten and El Calafate, Patagonia. Even with our high expectations, the views and overall experiences exceeded our expectations. In El Chalten we trekked Laguna de Los Tres (views of Mt. Fritz Roy, Guillaumet and Mermoz), Cerro Torre, Laguna Capri, and Huemul Glacier. In El Calafate we viewed and ice trekked on the Pietro Morena glacier and hiked throughout Estancia Cristina and Upsala Glacier.
The towns of El Chalten and El Calafate are interesting as well. El Calafate is a planned and developed city with a large year round population. El Chalten was built in a rush during a time of a 1980’s border dispute with Chile. This resulted in a small colorful and bohemic community of passionate trekkers and rock climbers.
